From Wrexham to Barcelona: April’s Journey of Stories and Celebration.

April brought a whirlwind of excitement, creativity, and meaningful moments. It was a month shaped by the release of two special books, a vibrant literary festival, and personal celebrations. Even with a few unexpected challenges, April offered a rich blend of family, travel, and artistic achievement that made it truly memorable.

April marked the arrival of two important projects. The first was the launch of Lone Lines & Quiet Echoes, my newest collection of monostich poetry. Equally thrilling was the release of Love Letters to Wrexham, a book that celebrates the spirit of the town (now officially a city) and its people. Both books were launched during the Wrexham Carnival of Words, a week‑long festival that has become a highlight for local writers and readers alike.

This year’s Carnival of Words felt more vibrant and engaging than ever. The atmosphere buzzed with enthusiasm as authors, readers, and community members came together to celebrate storytelling in all its forms. The festival also embraced the theme of 1876 – Wrexham’s Year of Wonder, weaving it into literary events throughout the week and giving the celebrations a deeper cultural resonance.

The festival’s success was a powerful reminder of how unifying literature can be. It highlighted the importance of local events in nurturing creativity, connection, and culture — something Wrexham continues to champion beautifully.

April is also special for another reason: it’s the month when both Emily and I celebrate our birthdays. This year, due to a bit of poor planning and human error, we found ourselves celebrating apart. Despite the distance, we each enjoyed wonderful moments surrounded by friends and family. Emily’s birthday was filled with a few days away friends and moments with family, while mine began under the Barcelona sun — a day spent relaxing with my mum and later celebrating with family over food and drinks. Though we missed being together, the warmth of those celebrations reminded us that meaningful connections can transcend physical distance. But we did manage celebrate together with friends towards the end of April after our mini breaks away.

Barcelona itself was a much‑needed escape after the intense preparation for the festival and book launches, as well as the sadness of Mum losing her adored cat, Phoebe. The trip offered the perfect chance to unwind and recharge. I have visited many times over the years as a young child with my parents and as a solo traveller in my teens and it has become a city I love and this trip like many times before added something truly special. We wandered through the architectural landscape, savoured authentic Catalan and Spanish cuisine, and soaked in the vibrant street life and of course a bit of retail therapy thrown in too.

Our visit coincided with Sant Jordi, the Catalan celebration of St George — the patron saint and symbolic hero of the Christian reconquest. Sant Jordi is often described as the Catalan Valentine’s Day, where locals exchange books and roses. Traditionally, men give roses to women, and women give books to men, though today the exchange is joyfully mutual. Experiencing this literary‑romantic tradition first hand was a beautiful reminder of how deeply stories and tales shape culture.

Looking back, April balanced professional achievements with personal milestones in the most rewarding way. The success of the book launches during the Wrexham Carnival of Words reinforced the joy of sharing stories and the value of community support. Our birthdays, though celebrated apart, highlighted the strength of our relationship and the importance of cherishing time with loved ones.

This blend of creativity, connection, and self‑care made April a standout month — a chapter filled with meaning, growth, and gratitude. And with May already unfolding, there is so much more to come. The lines within the pages of Lone Lines & Quiet Echoes certainly don’t stop in April.
